It may look like an unusual field telescope but this little device is a stitch counter . 
My local Holme valley and the surrounding area was renowned in the early 1900’s for the quality of its wool worsted fabric and these counters were used to check the quality of said cloths. 
This particular one was patented on the 10th September 1910 and has a revolving scale and fine needle to accurately measure the weave. 
A fabulous piece of our local history and a great bit of kit !
