I don’t think it’s the monetary value of an item that gives it worth, quite often it’s the story and history behind it that makes it interesting or special .

This small unassuming mug

is a case in point. The transfer has faded to an almost ghostly veil but we can still see the features of an old and rather stern looking man with mutton chops. We know who he is because the opposite side reads,“John Turner of Kirkburton. 100 years old on January 13, 1914 .”

A little digging reveals he made it to the national papers back then, an article in the Dundee Courier reports ,

“The King has sent to John Turner of Kirkburton, near Huddersfield, a letter congratulating him on the attainment of the 100th anniversary of his birthday ...”

I’m sure there are plenty more stories behind John Turner and I wonder if he lived to see the start of the First World War ? Anyway, it’s a simple piece of history and looks great with a posy of ( a little weary ) snowdrops !
