For world book day ….. a handwritten and I believe, original story dated April 21 1898.
It’s a rambling verbose affair full of the ‘horrors’ of sensuality and extolling the virtues of purity and spirituality, the opening lines read ….”I stood a shadow in a land of shadows…”.
The ephemera we usually come across are handwriting books where the script is generally neat and exemplary- here the penmanship is loose and flowing with crossing outs and has a frantic look, the result perhaps of some early automatic writing?
